A gravity drain needs continuous downward slope to an approved drain. A built-in or external pump can lift water, but it adds a component that can clog or fail. In either case, test the complete path and keep a leak alarm nearby.
What matters most
- Never assume a hose is draining because the unit is running.
- Avoid kinks, uphill sections, loose fittings, and submerged hose ends.
- Use only the hose size and pump arrangement allowed by the manual.
Choose gravity when the path allows it
Gravity is simple and quiet, but the drain must remain below the outlet with a steady slope. Support the hose so storage boxes or foot traffic cannot lift or pinch it.
Do not route water to a location where it can freeze, damage a foundation, or violate plumbing requirements.
Use a pump for lift, not convenience alone
A pump is useful when the only approved drain is higher than the unit. Check maximum lift, hose diameter, cleaning instructions, and what happens when the pump fails.
An external condensate pump should be rated and installed for the application. Electrical connections must stay dry and comply with the instructions.
Commission the system
Run the unit into its bucket first to confirm water collection. Then connect the hose, add a measured amount of water if the manual permits, and observe the destination.
Recheck after the first hour and the next day. A water alarm at the appliance and a second one near the drain path provide inexpensive warning.
A measured action plan
- 1Select an approved drain and map the full hose route.
- 2Follow the exact manual for fittings and pump limits.
- 3Test while present and inspect for leaks.
- 4Add leak alarms and review the path monthly.
